What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema refers to tissue swelling caused by accumulation of protein-rich fluid that is usually drained through the lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the legs and arms but can occur in other parts of the body. Any type of problem that blocks the drainage of lymph fluid can cause lymphedema.
Severe cases of lymphedema can affect the ability to move the affected limbs, increase the risks of skin infections and sepsis and can lead to skin changes and breakdown. Treatment may include compression bandaging, manual lymphatic drainage, compression stockings and skin care.
Make an appointment with you doctor if you notice persistent swelling in your legs or arms, hardening or thickening of the skin, recurring infection, or a feeling of heaviness or tightness in the limb.
